Frequently Asked Questions

How is the estimated tariff cost calculated?

The calculator applies the effective tariff rate for your product category and country of origin to your annual import value. Steel and aluminum products carry an additional 25% Section 232 surcharge on top of any country-specific rate. USMCA-qualifying imports from Mexico and Canada are assessed at 0% (except steel/aluminum).

What is duty drawback and how much can I recover?

Duty drawback is a CBP refund program that allows importers to reclaim up to 99% of tariffs paid on goods that are subsequently exported or destroyed. If you manufacture finished goods using imported materials and then export those goods, you likely qualify for drawback. Our calculator estimates potential recovery at 99% of tariffs paid.

Does the USMCA trade agreement protect all imports from Mexico and Canada?

No. While the USMCA (formerly NAFTA) provides 0% tariff rates for most qualifying goods from Mexico and Canada, it does not exempt Section 232 steel and aluminum duties. Steel and aluminum imports from Mexico and Canada are still subject to the 25% Section 232 tariff, regardless of USMCA status.

Are the tariff rates in this calculator current?

Rates reflect the 2025 tariff schedule including Section 301 (China), Section 232 (steel/aluminum), and reciprocal tariffs for countries like Vietnam (46%) and India (26%). Tariff policy is subject to change — always verify applicable rates with a licensed customs broker before making financial decisions.

Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual tariff liability depends on HTS classification, CBP rulings, and applicable trade agreements. Consult a licensed customs broker before making financial decisions.
